007 spectre film3/27/2023 ![]() ![]() And Craig, who has openly flirted with abandoning the role of 007 for years, would get to do something none of the other actors who have played Bond were given the chance to do: Bring Bond’s story to a logical and definitive end. Add to this a button-pushing score that goes jaga-jaga-jaga when Bond turns a plane into a snowplough or plays. A cryptic message from Bonds past sends him on a trail to uncover a sinister organization. And after a Bond movie with a "twist" that everyone guessed, it would end Craig’s run with a twist almost no one would guess-one of the few endings that would literally be unprecedented in 007’s 24-movie run.īest of all, the deck would be cleared for a brand-new actor to take over the role of 007 without any of the baggage accumulated by Craig’s Bond over the past ten years. Whose dream are we in Daniel Craig takes aim in Spectre. It would make for a fascinatingly timely, potent message about the pursuit of revenge at all costs. For better or worse, SPECTRE knitted Bond and Blofeld’s lives together if one dies, it stands to reason that the other should die, too. But I’d take the story in a darker direction. You could easily modernize this ending into something less corny and open-ended-Bond kills Blofeld and fakes his death, say, breaking loose from MI6 for a Dark Knight Rises-esque retirement. That’s the kind of antagonist that would serve as a fitting capper to Craig’s run as 007. But a modernized version could have Blofeld escaping from prison and using his apparently limitless resources to commit crimes around the world-setting off bombs, killing allegedly "undercover" Double-O agents, and raking in billions of dollars-while frustrating Bond with a series of red herrings and decoys. This is much more difficult to pull off on the big screen-particularly with Waltz locked in as the primary antagonist. The key to Fleming’s Blofeld is his slipperiness with every appearance, he changes his name and radically alters his appearance, so it’s nearly impossible for Bond to be certain whether he’s actually found Blofeld at all. Over the course of Thunderball, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, and You Only Live Twice, Blofeld stays behind the scenes, pulling the strings of various international criminals before finally revealing himself as the primary antagonist in Bond’s life. Directed by Sam Mendes, the 24th movie of this franchise follows James Bond’s first encounter with the global criminal organisation Spectre. Blofeld may have been let down by SPECTRE, but there are three novels in Fleming’s "Blofeld trilogy," and any of them could be mined for material. Casino Royale- the first and best movie in Daniel Craig’s tenure as 007-succeeded, in part, because it bucked years of franchise tradition by eschewing a totally original plot in favor of a modernized adaptation of a Fleming story. Moore played Bond seven times over a dozen years. ![]() ![]() But what kind of story would this new Bond follow? I think the answer is a simple one: Go back to the source material.
